**The short answer**

**ISTA 3A is a general simulation test for single parcels of 150 lb or less.** It runs as a fixed sequence of conditioning, drops and vibration that simulates a small parcel delivery network.

A pass is narrower than it sounds. **The test asks for one sample**, and **the shipper sets the damage rules**, not ISTA and not the lab.

ISTA 3A is the test named most often when a retailer, a customer or a carrier asks whether packaging holds up in parcel shipping. It is well built, widely run, and a report carries real weight.

It also proves less than most people assume, because three limits sit inside the procedure itself. None of them are hidden, yet nearly every guide written about it leaves them out.

## What ISTA 3A Covers

Test 3A covers single packaged products of 70 kg, or 150 lb, or less, sent through a parcel network. It is a [general simulation](https://ista.org/test_procedures.php) test, so it simulates the hazards of a distribution environment rather than any one carrier or route.

The procedure sorts packages into four types: standard, small, flat and elongated. Each type gets its own drop orientations and test blocks, so classifying the package correctly changes the test it faces. A package meeting both the flat and elongated definitions goes through as elongated.

One detail rewards a closer look, because it shows where the limit came from. The limit comes from how carriers work, not from the math.

## How the Sequence Works

The procedure runs as numbered test blocks in a fixed order: conditioning first, then shock, then vibration, then shock again. Two blocks are optional and the rest are required, and the order is not a suggestion.

Preconditioning lets the package settle at ambient laboratory conditions before anything else starts, and that matters more than it sounds. Fresh corrugated board is stiffer than board that has reached moisture equilibrium, so testing it straight off the truck flatters the result.

The optional conditioning block holds the package at a chosen temperature and humidity, which is how tropical or frozen distribution gets simulated. The optional low pressure block simulates altitude for air freight and checks whether closures hold.

## What a Pass Really Tells You

Three limits sit inside the procedure. ISTA states each one plainly in its own documentation, and each one changes what a report is worth.

**One sample.** The test asks for a single sample. A pass on a single unit tells you that one unit came through that one run.

**You set the acceptance criteria.** ISTA fixes the mechanical sequence, then leaves the acceptance criteria to the shipper. **None of this makes 3A weak.** A set, published, widely known sequence is worth far more than an in-house drop test nobody else accepts. The point is that a report answers one question well, and buyers often read it as answering three.

## Where the Test Hands the Job Back

A pass and a certificate are two different things. A procedure run correctly at a laboratory without that status still produces a valid result, though not an ISTA certificate, so ask a customer which of the two they want. Hazardous materials sit outside the procedure entirely. ISTA warns that packaging passing 3A may still fall short of national or international requirements for transporting hazardous materials. The procedure does not substitute for United Nations transport standards.

Retailer schemes are separate again. A parcel simulation does not satisfy a retailer program running its own protocol, which is why a package can clear 3A and still fail a scheme such as ISTA 6-Amazon.
